Installation of first surface water monitoring station (July 2022)

During a recent field campaign in July 2022 KIT-AGW and the company SEBA successfully installed the first online water monitoring station within the ViWaT-Project with the help of NAWAPI and DONRE Ca Mau. Parameters like temperature, salinity and pH are directly transmitted and can be directly evaluated by Vietnamese partners and our team.

Groundwater and land subsidence pilot site in Ca Mau (July 2022)

From July 07-09 the Hector Fellow Academy’s Symposium took place in Karlsruhe. Felix Dörr, PhD student at AGW and IWG and Hector-Fellow scholarship holder, presented his recent findings and concept for a land subsidence pilot site in Ca Mau peninsula. The pilot site will be developed at the ViWaT-site GW1, where we already had drilled three groundwater observation wells in 2020 which are equipped by multi-sensor systems, that e.g. record the water level and electrical conductivity of the groundwater. In early 2022, a corner reflector for an optimization of satellite-based subsidence evaluation was added to the site already.

By the end of this year, the land subsidence observatory is intended to be drilled and installed, which will measure the land subsidence in different depths and will help to understand the processes behind the observed subsidence. Moreover, the installation of several soil water observation sensors is planned for the end of this year at site-GW1, which contribute to a better system-understanding of the land subsidence in Ca Mau peninsula.

Client II Newsletter – ViWaT-Engineering (28.04.2022)

Within the ViWat - Engineering project, a protection concept for the eroding coast of the western Mekong Delta is being developed. In order to plan the breakwaters and ensure their stability on site, various subsurface parameters (shear strength, friction, etc.) must be determined and evaluated in advance. For this purpose, geotechnical exploratory drilling was carried out by scientists from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT-IWG) together with Vietnamese project partners at the beginning of April 2022. The demanding drilling work was carried out on a floating drilling platform (Fig. 1) at a distance of several 100m from the coast. Drill cores were taken for laboratory tests and strength tests were carried out directly in the borehole (Fig. 2). In parallel, the shear strength in the soil of the eroding mangrove belt was also investigated (Fig. 3). The data obtained will be incorporated into the dimensioning of the structure during the further planning process.

ViWaT-Engineering: Field test of a quality monitoring station for surface water (14.10.2021)

In ViWaT-Engineering, the companies SEBA Hydrometrie and bbe Moldaenke are developing innovative monitoring stations to monitor surface water quality in the Mekong Delta. Already in October 2020, a pilot test of the first monitoring station was successfully completed in the hydraulic engineering laboratory of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). However, as the station could not subsequently be installed in the Mekong Delta as planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was tested at the Hullern Dam (NRW) in the period from June to September 2021. It is planned to implement the station at its intended location in Vietnam later this year.

Vier Institute des KIT unterstützen Vietnam mit dem ViWaT Mekong Projekt. - Campus-Report am 15. 12. 2020

Interview with Prof. Dr. Stefan Norra, Dr. Nicolas Börsig and M.Sc. Jonas Bauer

"The Covid pandemic only gives a small taste of a much bigger crisis that is seemingly unstoppable. In many places the climate crisis is already a cruel reality. The mighty Mekong River in Southeast Asia, for example, has been threatened by droughts for years. It is one of the longest rivers on earth and the lifeline for the people in six neighboring countries. In the very south of Vietnam, where the Mekong flows into the South China Sea, a team of researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is supporting people in their desperate fight against salt penetrating the groundwater"

Start of groundwater monitoring well drillings (22.08.2020)

During the next weeks five groundwater monitoring wells in two locations in Ca Mau Province will be drilled with a maximum depth of
250 m. Sediment cores are taken for further mineralogical analysis. Furtheremore, pumping tests and groundwater sampling in different aquifers will be conducted. In the end the wells will be equipped with online sensor technology to monitor salinity, water level and more.
